Do you know the ABC of Goal Setting?
To keep Goals simple and practical ask yourself if your riding Goals meet the following quick Guide.
A = ACHIEVABLE? –Dreams are what sports are made of! Big dreams motivate us to train harder and inspire us to reach our full potential. The key is to set realistic short-term goals to help you along the way. Think of a long-term goal such as the Olympics or the Regionals at the top of the ladder and in that analogy, each rung to get to the top of the ladder needs to be a realistic step – one that you can visualize, train for, and achieve
B = BEST FRIEND? – Too much energy is wasted on goals that sound negative! By re-wording many goals it can sound more positive like something a best friend would say to you. For example, having a goal like “don’t under ride the corners” requires you to imagine not riding deep into the corner – the opposite of what you want to do! Re-wording the goal to “ride all corners deep” is a simple fix and ensures your Goals really are your new best friend.
CLEAR? – Replace any vague words with a measurable instruction. Choose an instruction unique to you that you know if you are able to complete it, will work! Practice it before show day and in the warm up and incorporate it into your daily home practice routines.
Not all riders set goals or feel the need to do so. If you do, then getting goal setting right will help avoid stress, de-motivation and a slump in performance. Good goal setting also ensures we can celebrate victories as they arise!
