Are you a rider who puts in 100% effort every time you ride and do you try as hard during your training, as you do on competition days?
Research from professional athletes suggests that if you do give your all in every day practice, you raise your chances of producing the performance you want when it counts.
Bottom line; don’t go through the motions. Practice hard and at 100%!
In reality our riding practice is as important as competition. Just because we may ride every day doesn’t mean it isn’t practice time. Riding lessons or specific training drills are of course good practice moments but make every day count to keep you in the right mental zone.
Whatever habit you create at home is likely to be the one you produce on show day!
Most of us forget to practice our ‘human skills’. This includes self awareness, self control and self regulation. As a quick test do YOU practice staying present when riding every day? For how long can you remain ‘in the moment’?
Visualisation of your ideal ride is also key to practice. Put simply its hard to score well like you’ve imagined if you don’t imagine it first!
In summary: Practice how you want to perform when it counts!
It’s okay to have some fun and down time too with your horse, but do get into the habit of thinking as riding time as also good habit forming practice time! You’ll appreciate it later on in the season.
