Have you stopped to think about the concept of “trust” as a Trust Bank Account. Have you pondered about how to build it up to be healthy for you and your companion horse? Just like a bank account you can add to it and you can take away from it – consciously and unconsciously.
Your horse, much like your bank manager prefers it if you are trustworthy and consistent in your deposits! He feels less easy if you are constantly making withdrawals leaving him guessing when the right behaviour will return again?
All our actions are under our horses keen eye and scrutiny. If you want to know how to build trust with your horse there is a formula. That formula includes being reliable, capable and a tad vulnerable! Most importantly it also requires an absence of an agenda, ego or self interest! How many riders can say that this is true of ourselves or our approach to riding and horse welfare? I’ll leave you to decide for yourself!
So, it is great to read articles from competitive riders such as the one below paying reference to the importance of trust – which of course should be a two way street!
So my call to action is to get your maths head on as well as your riding breeches and make sure your trust score is in balance so you and your horse can keep each other safe!
